Manchester United defender pulls out of internationals amid Alejandro Garnacho disappointment

A number of Manchester United stars are flying off to join up with their national teams this week as the domestic season pauses again.

The international break allows breathing space for Erik ten Hag after a jumbled few weeks. His side have the best Premier League record within the last five games, winning all but one.

However, when opposition and performances are accounted for, the United boss will be far from satisfied, especially when it comes to the Champions League. He also has a growing injury list too. Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen have been ruled out of Denmark’s matches after picking up problems against Luton on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho has not joined up with Argentina. And now another teammate has withdrawn from his international duty, but for different reasons.

Diogo Dalot withdraws from Portugal squad

Diogo Dalot has withdrawn from Portugal’s squad for the international break due to personal reasons. Dalot was set to feature for Portugal in their two upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying games, but the player has been released for unspecified personal reasons following talks with manager Roberto Martinez.

Portugal have already qualified for the tournament and Dalot was given permission by Martinez to withdraw from the squad.

Dalot started in United’s 1-0 win against Luton Town at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon and he played at right-back in the absence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who missed out due to illness.

Garnacho handed Argentina blow

Alejandro Garnacho has been left out of the Argentina squad for the upcoming international break.

Lionel Scaloni’s side have two massive 2026 World Cup qualifiers to look forward to over the next fortnight. The current holders host Uruguay on Friday before travelling to Brazil next Wednesday.

Scaloni confirmed his 28-man squad for the two matches overnight but Garnacho’s name was not present. The United winger will not be involved, seemingly replaced by the returning Angel Di Maria.
